A new fish and chip shop is to open soon in Abingdon.

A sign has just gone up on shop unit at the Reynolds Way shops in south Abingdon saying 'Opening soon: Spa Fish and Chips'.

There used to be a Chinese takeaway in the row of shops but it closed several years ago.

The parade also has a grocery store, a chemist and a pizza takeaway.

Oxford Mail: Shops in Reynolds Way, AbingdonStaff at the chemist said: "We have heard the new chip shop could be opening by the end of the month but we don't have a date."

One passer by said the Chinese takeaway used to serve chips and it would be good to have a fish and chip shop in the area.

Abingdon also has three other fish and chip shops - Abingdon Fish and Chips in the Square, Reeves in Ock Street and Smarts on the Peachcroft estate.

In 2019, Salamis fish and chip shop in Ock Street was refurbished and renamed Reeves.

The Reeves family had run a fish and chip shop at the location until the 1980s and the owners decided to return to the old name.

Abingdon Fish and Chips in the town centre opened in 2018.

In November 2022 it was announced Smarts Fish and Chips on the Peachcroft estate had closed after 30 years as a result of the cost of living crisis, and residents said high rents and increased overheads had resulted in closure.

Paulo Pestana and Alvaro Gouveia run the business, the together with another fish shop called Monica's in Evesham, Worcestershire.

Mr Pestana said at the time: "Smarts shut at the end of last year and we bought the lease from the previous owners.

"We spent quite a lot on refurbishment and we are very pleased to be open."
