The fire service has deployed 15 flood tubes in West Street on Osney Island, Oxford, in a bid to protect homes against possible flooding.

Sandbag barriers have also been built at the end of Wytham Street, Lake Street and Bullstake Close.

Five water pumps are on standby in Osney and another one is ready to be called into action in Wolvercote or Vicarage Road.

Tim Sadler, interim executive director of city services at Oxford City Council, said: "So far, the fire service has received no flooding calls but river levels are rising and we are remaining vigilant.

"Environment Agency officials have visited all properties at risk of flooding. We have built sandbag walls in the most vulnerable areas and are doing everything in our power to prepare for a possible flood.

"The situation is changeable and we will continue to monitor developments. We would encourage residents to monitor the situation as well and be responsible for their own properties.

"There are details on our website to advise residents on how to prepare for flooding should water levels rise."

The Environment Agency website has some simple tips on how to protect your home from flooding. There is also an incident hotline - Floodline - if people are unable to access a computer, on 08459 881188.
